About Gary Champagne

Since I was 5 years old I have been very active, playing a variety of sports including baseball, tennis, soccer, football and basketball. In 1998 I suffered a severe foot injury during a baseball game, placing me in a leg cast for 6 months. Due to the months of inactivity, my body fat increased tremendously, topping my weight off at 250 pounds as a 5’10 freshman in high school. Due to my foot injury limiting my ability to run, rowing was one of the only sports that would complement my aggressive demeanor yet respect the limitations of my foot injury.

During my four years at Redwood High School, I rowed for the Marin Rowing Association from 1999-2002 as team captain for both novice and varsity squads and was awarded male athlete of the year in both 2001 and 2002. During the summers of 2001 and 2002, I was selected as one of fourteen rowers in the nation to be a member of the U.S. Junior National Team, competing in the World Rowing Championships overseas in Germany and Lithuania. While at UC Berkeley, I continued rowing under coach Steve Gladstone in his top Freshman and Varsity boats. During my career at Cal, I developed a unique style of muscular and cardiovascular training to keep me at the top of the squad. I also found that proper nutrition was a way to amplify the effects of my training, enabling me to train harder, more frequently, and recover faster between workouts.

Since then, I have dedicated my life to the study of exercise physiology, sports nutrition and teaching people of all ages how to best help themselves achieve their fitness goals. Though I have worked with both men and women of all ages, my specialty is helping high school and collegiate athletes obtain the levels of fitness required to compete at the highest levels of competition. I also have the ability to help those who are not serious athletes, but rather looking to put on lean muscle and lose excess body fat. I also specialize in implementing dietary plans for whatever your fitness goals may be.

Currently I am a fully certified personal trainer with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), with a strong emphasis on nutrition and weight management. In June of 2007, I opened up the new Corte Madera location for Champagne Fitness. For the future, I plan to increase the number of locations around the bay area and continue studying and practicing the information and techniques in this field as it evolves.
